History of Gospel Music

In this course, you will trace the rich lineage of gospel music as a soundtrack of resilience and innovation, moving from the coded resistance of Negro spirituals to modern, genre-bending chart-toppers. Beyond exploring its historical and cultural impact on social justice, you will break down the intricate music theory behind the genre—including “preacher chords,” minor blues inflections, and traditional call-and-response structures.
This academic study is paired with a mandatory in-class performing ensemble component, where you will participate in workshops to physically experience the power of three-part vocal harmonies and communal grooves, honoring gospel as a foundational pillar of American musical culture.
