Have you ever had a song stuck in your head and wondered — how did someone write that?

In Songwriting Studio, young writers discover that songs aren't magic. They're made of ingredients, rhymes, rhythms, feelings, and just the right words, and anyone can learn to use them. Each week, students explore a new piece of the songwriter's toolkit by studying real songs and then putting it into practice themselves. We'll look inside familiar favorites to ask: Where does it rhyme? What makes that line stick? How did the writer turn a feeling into a lyric? Then students put pen to paper and do exactly that.

This class is part music appreciation, part creative writing, and entirely student-driven. Writers work on prompts, rewrite verses of familiar songs with their own words, and gradually build toward something completely original. There's no blank-page panic here; every lesson starts with a song that shows students exactly what's possible. By the end of the course, each student will have written their own song to take home and keep.

No instruments. No music-reading experience. No pressure.

Please note: To ensure the best learning experience, activities may be modified depending on student needs, resources, or instructional planning.
