In this engaging and thought-provoking course, you will trace how physical movement has shaped African American life. Using historical documents such as fugitive slave ads and paintings, you will explore this history through the lenses of geography, culture, activism, and community building. In the process, you will examine how geographical movement reveals the changing landscape of Black life from enslavement to the 21st century. Along the way, you will gain insights that inspire a better understanding of the variety of efforts African Americans have waged to exert control over their lives in the face of forces designed to limit their freedom.
