Join instructor Abby McDonald from the GEaRS (Global Education and Research Services) team in Art & Story! Art has always been how humans make sense of the world; recording history, preserving culture, challenging ideas, and sharing experiences that words alone cannot capture. In Art & Story, students dig into the deeper connection between visual art and narrative, exploring how artists across history and cultures have used images, symbols, composition, and media to tell powerful stories. Each week focuses on a different storytelling tradition, from sequential art and illustration to narrative portraiture, landscape, folk art patterns, and wordless visual books; with a hands-on project that challenges students to apply the same techniques to stories from their own lives and imaginations. Students will develop their eye for visual communication, study artists from around the world, and build a body of work that reflects their individual voice and perspective. This class is for students who want to go beyond technique and understand what art is actually trying to say.
