Join instructor Sarah Cifredo from the GEaRS team to discover—or deepen—the art of seeing the world through a photographer's eye! We'll explore how to tell powerful stories through images, studying light, composition, perspective, and visual storytelling. Whether you've never taken a photo on purpose or you already know your way around a frame, this class meets you exactly where you are. Newcomers will build a strong foundation in the fundamentals of photography, while returning students will be challenged with extended creative assignments, advanced techniques, and opportunities to mentor and lead. Everyone shoots, everyone grows, and everyone creates.

Students will work through creative photo challenges, study great images from celebrated photographers, and collaborate on a stop-motion animation project using their own photographs. Experienced photographers will push further — exploring intentional lighting, compositional storytelling, and more complex creative briefs that take their skills to the next level.

In this hands-on class, students will:
  • Explore how light and perspective shape powerful photographs
  • Learn and apply composition and visual storytelling techniques
  • Collaborate to bring photos to life in a stop-motion video
  • Study the work of celebrated photographers for inspiration and discussion
Returning students will also:
  • Take on extended creative challenges and advanced technique work
  • Develop leadership skills by sharing what they know with newer photographers
  • Build a more sophisticated personal portfolio across the semester
You don't need a fancy camera (we have them in class!!)  Just bring your curiosity, your eye, and your willingness to see the world a little differently. Cell phone cameras welcome!

Please note: To ensure the best learning experience, activities may be modified depending on student needs, resources, or instructional planning.
