Welder trainees will advance and adapt their skills in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) processes to pipe welding. The trainee will be trained in techniques required of a certified pipe welder. Through classroom and lab instruction, training emphasis is placed on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper and safe setup, use, and care of welding equipment, and the trainee's ability to prepare material and perform proper tacks and feather edging, filler metal angles, and manipulations for open root pipe welding. Training will consist of E6010 root and hot pass with E7018 low  hydrogen fill and cap. Welding practice is designed for certification to ASME IX, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in the 6G position on carbon steel. Upon successful completion of the course, a welding test piece is submitted for certification. In this advanced course, Welder trainees will advance and adapt their Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) processes to pipe welding. The trainee will be trained in techniques required of a certified pipe welder. Through classroom and lab instruction, training emphasis is placed on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper and safe setup, use, and care of welding equipment, and the trainee's ability to prepare material and perform proper tacks and feather edging, filler metal angles, and manipulations for open root pipe welding. Training will consist of welding on carbon steel pipe with the GTAW process. Welding is performed with ER70S carbon steel solid wire with upward progression. Welding practice is designed for certification to ASME IX, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in the 6G position on carbon steel. Upon successful completion of the course, a welding test piece is submitted for certification.
