The veterinary assistant training program prepares students to work in the animal care field. As a trained assistant, they will be involved in supporting veterinary technicians and veterinarians in a variety of inpatient and outpatient activities from the care and feeding of animals to medical treatment within the scope of the law. Course participants will be provided with training in basic veterinary medicine, effective client communications, introduction to diagnostic procedures, and assisting the doctor during diagnosis. They learn basic terminology and drug classifications, patient treatment and care, how to set up an operating room, universal precautions and anesthesia procedures, and how to assist with the management of emergency situations.

This continuing education certificate opens for new students once a year. The training is a year-long program that opens for registration mid-July with classes starting in late August or early September. There are three classes that must be registered for together in the fall and three classes that must be registered together in the spring.
